NEW THERAPEUTIC APPROACHES AND DRUG DISCOVERY

In the last decade, drug options for different diseases are rapidly increased, but several of these latters remain a significant global health problem and an area of increased awareness among both patients and medical practitioners. Many scientific results have highlighted new targets for drug discovery, including inhibition of inflammatory mediators and newly formed proteins. Epidemiological and prospective studies have, also, potentially proposed the vital role of bioactive substances, present in the food, and/or set in the context of a dietary, in reducing the risk of cancer and cardiovascular diseases. In addition, the study for evaluating new molecules to treat painful conditions are in progress. No pharmacologic interventions, such as antioxidants, deserve equal emphasis both in the prevention and treatment of several age-related diseases, therefore, their use as drugs could be useful. New developments in drug delivery research are likely to have important impacts on pharmaceutical and biomedical industries.

It is evident that, for the complexity of the disease, strategies targeting different multiple systems involved in disease progression are required to maximize the therapeutic benefits of intervention. To this end, there are a number of approaches currently under active evaluation andfor this, the interaction among scientists and industries is required.

Dr Rita Rezzani received is PhD in Physiological Sciences in 1990 from the University of Milan, Italy; she then moved to University of Brescia (Italy) from where she she started her scientific carrier.

Her main themes of research are: 1) study of mechanism of different natural antioxidant interaction with free radicals and the resulting products in different experimental conditions; 2) study of biomarkers involved in the development and progression of cardiovascular diseases; 3) study of the effects of immunosuppressants such as Cyclosporine A; 3) study of neuronal pathway involved in pain transmission.

She is the author of 110 papers in extenso and 170 abstracts for national and international congress.

She is the Editorial board member of the journal Acta Histochemica. She is also the member of several scientific societies including Histochemical Society, and Società Italiana di Anatomia. She is a treasurer of Società Italiana Studio Dolore Orofaciale. Moreover, she is also performing her duties as a referee in a number of journals including J. Pineal Research, Molecular Vision, Environmental Toxicology and Pharmacology, Pharmacological Research, British Journal Urology, Histology and Histopathology.

She is working as Full Professor and Chair of Human Anatomy at the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery, University of Brescia (Italy).
