Medical Treatment of PAH and the Role of Lung Transplantation
in 2010
Antonio Roman
Spain
Medical treatment of PAH has improved in the last decade. More than
25 clinical trials have demonstrated the efficacy of the today available
drugs. In the near future, some new insights will come from combined
therapy that will be the on going research objective. All of this
very important effort does not mean that PAH will be cured in the
next decade. So we still must be concerned about the role of lung
transplantation for this disease.
I am going to present the update in clinical trials results, some
changes in the design of these studies and, finally, some aspects
of lung transplantation in PAH. Regarding lung transplantation, it
is important to consider time of referral, time of transplantation
and the lung allocation system that will influence results. All of
these aspects will be revisited.
