It is known, that under X- or gamma-irradiation several types of glasses get dark in the violet spectral range, while others are colored much less. Windows or tubes in the devices for UV-sterilization should not get colored so as not to absorb UV-radiation. For this purpose the most suitable is the glass made from very pure SiO2 (<0.0001 % impurities) which does not become colored even under gamma-irradiation. While for protection of eyes of medical personnel and patients it is necessary to use the glass with strong absorption in UV-range, where complicate violet light filters are usually applied. The aim of this work was to study opportunity of gamma-irradiation for improving the protection property of optical materials used in medical techniques. We studied the effect of irradiation with 60-Co gamma-quanta in the dose range of 10k–1M Roentgen on the optical absorption of SiO2 glasses containing BaO or PbO. After such irradiation the glass acquires nice golden or brown colors, absorbs actively the UV-radiation, but transmits yellow-orange light, does not have residual radioactivity and gets sterilized. The obtained results allow us to offer the SiO2 glasses containing barium and led oxides for personal protection of eyes from UV-radiation in medicine.
