Introduction: The relationship
between blood pressure and lifestyle among women has been the subject
of few studies all over the world. This demands epidemiological
research in order to study the relationship between these factors
from different perspectives.
Background: The province of Halland is situated in the
south west of Sweden. Studies of both historical and modern data
have revealed that mortality from circulatory organ in the province
has for many years been below that of the national average.
Aim: To establish whether a relationship also exists between
blood pressure and lifestyle in a healthy female population.
Material and method: A cross-sectional study was carried
out (1,943 women). The age interval was 18 - 84 years. The questionnaire
covered, in addition to background variables, lifestyle, as well
as diagnosed blood pressure.
Multiple logistic regression was used as well as an odds ratio (OR)
with a 95% confidence interval.
Result: The result of the multivariate analysis revealed
that the variables stress and BMI had a significant effect on blood
pressure (Stress: OR=1.64; 95% CI=1.04 - 2.60) and (BMI: OR=1.11;
95% CI=1.07 - 1.15). The result was adjusted for age and socioeconomic
status (SES).
Conclusion: The study reveals that this pattern can also
be found in a relatively healthy population with significantly low
blood pressure values.
