New drugs to prevent and/or fight cancer
are still a challenge of great importance. Nature is a ponderable
source for various medicaments. Results of many scientific efforts
have shown that many representatives of one vast and variable group
of natural compounds known as flavonoids may stand in a queue for
being the chemopreventive and chemotherapeutic drugs of future.
Research in our laboratory also showed potential beneficial effects
of some flavonoid substances, namely isorhamnetin, myricetin and
kaempferol. They were studied in vitro for their antioxidant/anticarcinogenic
properties, which are important for cancer chemoprevention and treatment.
Their prosperous effects on chemotherapy-induced apoptosis were
also investigated using leukemia cells. Results obtained indicated
their potential usefulness in oncology. Our work was supported by
the grants: VEGA 1/0008/08, 2/0072/09, SK-BG-0017-08.
