Francis Enifo Oronsaye
Nigeria

Background: Bleeding from accidental cuts, wounds and bruises is a common health problem in developing countries with low standard of hygiene and inadequate first aid treatment. If not quickly stopped it can lead to excessive loss of blood and other complications such as shock and in hemophilias this can be very fatal .The open wounds can pave way for bacterial infections like tetanus. The purpose of this study therefore, was to determine the efficacy of this lotion in stopping bleeding from accidental cuts, wounds and abrasions and healing of such cuts. This study is novel because the authors are not aware of such effect by any compound containing the ingredients as contained in this lotion (Oronsfranklo (R))

Methods: 150 Adults comprising 80 males and 70 females attending the accident unit of University of Benin Teaching Hospital, Benin City were randomly recruited in the study. Strict confidentiality and ethics committee approval of the Teaching Hospital was obtained before the commencement of study. Wounds and cuts sustained by the subjects were treated with the lotion using cotton wool bud. The composition of the lotion is as follows salicylic acid 4% in ethyl acohol, wt/vol, glycerine 3%vol/vol

The salicylate was dissolved in the alcohol, Glycerine was added and the mixture was allowed to stand

BResults: The bleeding from the cuts and wounds stopped immediately and wounds were completely healed within three days of lotion application.

Conclusion: We present that this lotion can stop bleeding from cuts and wounds immediately and the wounds are healed within three days of application.
