Session Speaker

Smart Materials for Pharmaceutical Industry
Kal Karim and Sergey Piletsky
UK

The Smart Materials Group is one of the world leaders in Molecular Imprinting specializing in the development of polymer science for solving practical problems in separation and sensing.

The group combines world class research with more than 100 papers in peer-reviewed journals and over 25 patent applications with industrial expertise. To date high value academic and industrial projects has resulted from their continuing research in areas such as:

(i) Development of synthetic receptors
(ii) Conjugated Molecularly Imprinted Polymers (MIPs)
(iii) Computational design
(iv) Nanotechnology,
(v) Molecular recognition
(vi) Drug development
(vii) Membrane and sensor technology
The application of this research is far reaching and has/will impact on areas such as:
(a) Medical/clinical diagnostics in assays and sensors
(b) Toxicity screening
(c) Development of new pharmaceuticals and drug cocktails
(d) New sensors for pharmaceutical manufacturing and environmental monitoring
(e) Implantable sensors and "smart" pills and
(f) Nanotechnology
Examples will be given on polymer based synthetic receptors (MIPs) on targets of pharmaceutical relevance such as detection of metabolites, prescription drugs, clinical diagnostic drug monitoring, validation of cleaning procedure and drugs of abuse.
