FABRICATION, PHYSICOCHEMICAL EVALUATION AND PRELIMINARY EFFICACY ASSESSMENT OF A COSMETIC EMULSION ENCAPSULATED WITH SYZYGIUM CUMINIEXTRACT

Abstract

Emulsions are marvellous and exhilarating systems for carrying the useful pharmaceutical and cosmetic agents. The present work describes the stability of cosmetic emulsion (w/o) loaded with 4% extract of Syzygium cumini L. (Myrtaceae). The formulation was developed using non-ionic lipophilic emulsifier and was monitored for different physicochemical parameters i.e. color, creaming, liquefaction, conductivity, centrifugation, pH, rheological parameters. Insignificant (P≥0.05) changes in pH were observed by using two way ANOVA and LSD test. Rheological properties indicate that all the samples exhibit shear thinning or pseudoplastic behaviour with increasing rate of shear. Patch test showed no skin irritation when applied to volunteers (n=11). Further study showed That formulation with 14% oil, 3.5% Abil EM 90 and 80.5% distilled water was found stable at all storage conditions and can be used as safe and effective carrier system of 4% Syzygium cuminiL. extract to enhance the desired skin revitalizing effects.
